Garth Wood Determined to Lose Brawler Tag

The plan is clear for Australian Middleweight, Garth 'From The Hood'  Wood knock over Sam Soliman February 19 in Sydney then earn an IBF world title shot against fellow Australian Middleweight,  Daniel Geale.

Wood who is best known for winning 'The Contender Australia' series and knocking out 3 time world champion Anthony Mundine in their first clash before losing in a controversial decision in their second hasn't ruled out a 3rd fight to decide the one win each, "never say never," said Wood. "I'd always be up for it but I don't know the thoughts of their camp."

In the lead up to both of the Wood vs Mundine clashes words were spoken between the pair and heated exchanges were beamed onto our television screens.

"It was all real," explained Wood. "It was two guys that are really ambitious and there was a lot on the line." "We haven't spoken since, maybe we will speak again at the press conference for the decider."

Wood split with one of Australia's best trainers-Billy Hussein late in 2011 and made the hour trip north to train with Joel Keegan at the Umina PCYC, which he told Aus-Boxing was his own decision. "At 33 I believe I am still capable of learning the sweet science."

"I have been tagged just as a brawler and after moving to Joel Keegan I believe he is developing me into a more complete boxer."  Wood explains that his brawler instincts came from his days as a youth when he learned to fight on the street. "I learnt to fight from a young age on the street and it's always handy to have it in your back pocket."

"As I have mentioned I am always developing my craft as does any professional athlete. I can assure you that when someone jumps into the ring with me they don't know what to expect. I have only had 12 professional fights and in a further 5 fights my style would have only been further developed."

Vic Darchinyan vs Shinsuke Yamanaka Contracts Finalised for WBC Title

Seeking the best possible fights on the planed, former multiple world champion, Vic "Raging Bull" Darchinyan (37-4-1, 27 KOs) has finalized his negotiations to challenge Japan's undefeated WBC bantamweight titlist, Shinsuke Yamanaka (15-0-2, 11 KOs).

Promoter Gary Shaw stated, "Contracts have been signed, sealed and delivered. The fight is finalized and will take place in Tokyo, Japan sometime in April. Nothing makes me more proud than having a throwback fighter like Darchinyan, who will take risks and step in the ring with anyone, anywhere. Yamanaka will be defending his belt in his native land so Vic's got to go in there and put it on him. I believe Darchinyan's power punching style will lead him to victory."

Darchinyan, an elite fighter in the flyweight and super flyweight divisions went on to say, "I'm extremely pleased with the WBC's decision to give me another title shot. I've fought and defended the WBC title with honor and pride. I love everything the WBC stands for because I believe they know I'm a true warrior and will leave everything in the ring when I go to battle. My gratitude to José Sulaimán is everlasting because he's always been there for me throughout my career. Capturing a world championship in three divisions has been a goal of mine since I won my first belt. I know I have what it takes to be champion at bantamweight."

Having traveled the globe from Australia to America and now Japan, Darchinyan must be recognized as one of boxing's most respected fighters. A Hall of Fame career is fast approaching should he continue his march toward a treasured third world title in as many divisions.

Shaw went on to say, "There's no doubt about it, Vic is a future Hall of Famer. In his era, he fought the best that was out there. He's never been in a boring fight. His style has always been crowd pleasing and you'll never see any quit in him, ever. He'll get my vote for the Hall of Fame when that time comes. Vic's got plenty of fight left in him and come April, you'll know why he's one of the best prize fighters of his time."

In a quest to capture a world championship on foreign land, Darchinyan has a difficult task in front of him. Most fighters at the elite level would never take that gamble.

Shaw continued, "You have to give Darchinyan a ton of credit for taking this fight in Japan. Not many fighters will travel overseas to fight for a world title. He's given his heart and soul to this sport and I applaud the WBC for recognizing his soldier spirit."

Undefeated Corey McConnell Set to Head South

Corey McConnell undefeated featherweight champ, 5 times Queensland champ and Arafura, Oceania games gold medal winner will leave his home here on the Gold Coast this week and move to Sydney to train for Daniel Geale’s undercard fight on Main Event PPV, March 7 in Tasmania.

Corey has been training with long time coach and mentor Greg Walker at Team Phantom in Currumbin and at his home gym Legends Boxing & Fitness in Nerang. After overcoming a broken hand and some personal hurdles recently our 26 year old champ decided to surround himself with positive caring family and friends for support, trained hard and is now ready to make waves once again in the world of boxing.

“I’ve never felt so ready to box, the last 6 months have been tuff but as they say what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger and I feel really strong mentally and physically. I’ve trained really hard and have a great base fitness to begin training in Sydney, Gary Christiansen from Isagenix put me on some dietary and health supplements a month ago and I feel awesome this has been the key to training harder over longer rounds in the ring something I have really wanted to work on.

I’m really looking forward to beginning the next chapter in my professional boxing career in Sydney and making a comeback ideally it would have been better to stay here on the Gold Coast but I’ll be home every couple of weeks to see my family and friends and ground myself here at my home gym at Legends, we have the best people come here and train, it’s like one of those old school gyms where you always just feel at home.

Prazak Defeats Larcinese In US Debut

Having her first fight in the United States after signing with Greg Cohen Promotions, WIBA Super-Featherweight champion, Diana Prazak put on an impressive display of boxing defeating Lucia Larcinese of Canada in a 6 round unanimous decision in New York on Thursday night.

In the opening round Prazak with former Women's world champion-Melissa Hernandez shouting instructions from her corner moved forward well leading with her jab causing Larcinese to back up. Round 2 was action packed with both women trading from centre ring in the opening stages before Prazak stepped it up landing with her jabs to take the round.

It was a tight affair in round 3 with both boxers coming together numerous times. Larcinese seemed to land the cleaner blows to claim the round. In round 4 Prazak came out working the body shots against Larcinese who was being pushed back against the ropes and caught with more shots. In the closing stages Prazak went up and down with her jabs to claim the round.

Prazak again landed the better shots in round 5 and 6 with Larcinese backing up struggling to land any punches of note. In the closing stages of the fight Di landed some big shots to bring the decision home.

The judges scored the fight: John Poturaj 59-55 | judge: John Signorile 58-56 | judge: Steve Weisfeld 58-56 with Aus-Boxing agreeing with judge 1 scoring it 59-55.

After the fight Prazak said, "Last night was a big night, I'm very happy to walk away with a win for my first fight of the year. I'm a little disappointed with my first performance in the US but I will learn from it and come back stronger."

Di's next fight will be in the middle of February in the States before returning to Australia for the first defense of her world title and will take place in Melbourne on March 16 against Fatuma Zarika.

Chris John Pulls Out Of Joel Brunker Fight Due To 'Betting Purposes'

Joel Brunker has advised Aus-Boxing.com that Chris John's management team has cancelled their fighters bout with the Australian Featherweight which was due to take place at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel & Casino in Singapore on March 31st, 2012 with the WBA Featherweight title on the line.

An agreement had been reached in contract form on the 14th December 2011 and the fight was sanctioned to take place in Singapore.

"Negotiations for this bout started about 2 weeks prior to the signing of the contract", said Brunker's manager Angelo Di Carlo. "Joel was already booked to fight on the Daniel Geale undercard but that position has now been lost."

Last week Brunker's Di Carlo received a phone call off Chris John's manager who told him that the fight could possibly be cancelled on the basis of 'betting purposes' as the venue wanted to see an Asian boxer in the other corner to secure the highest possible returns with regards to betting.

At 10.05am on Thursday January 17, 2012-Di Carlo received a call from Chris John's management team to say that this fight had indeed been cancelled and that a new date would possibly be scheduled for Joel in the future.

Di Carlo told Aus-Boxing that it was initially John's management that approached the Australian for the fight.

In an interview with Aus-Boxing Brunker said, "It is totally unprofessional and disrespectful to entice me out of other arrangements, agree to the term and conditions of the contract and after I sign on the dotted line a month later tell me the fights off."

"This move by John's management has caused me to miss out on a spot I had for the upcoming Daniel Geale undercard, which I was prepared to do under the obligations of the contract we both agreed upon in December 2011."

"It is back to the drawing board for us. I have lost out on so many opportunities from other promotions so I could commit myself to the Chris John fight. We will continue to chase the hard fights in our quest for a world title shot."

Katsidis vs McCloskey In The Works For March/April In Belfast

Irish-Boxing.com has revealed that Eddie Hearn has exhausted all world title avenues to no avail and can not get Paul McCloskey a shot at a prestigious belt in March.

Hearn is bringing Prizefighter to the Odyssey in late March or early April and will amazingly use the tournament as an undercard for a Paul McCloskey/Michael Katsidis clash.

“I spoke to Paul and told him we need a name to keep his profile up and we need a fight soon to keep him rocking. Katisidis is a well know fighter. He is know in Britain and Ireland because of his fights with Kevin Mitchell and Ricky Burns. He likes to go to war. He is the type of opponent that will capture the imagination. We need to keep banging the drum and defeating Katisidis will keep Paul in world title contention,” said Hearn.

The heir to the Matchroom throne has already began talks with team Katsidis and claims inaugural Prizefighter winner Martin Rogan is on board to fight in a Heavyweight Prizefighter the Internationals.

Katsidis lost to Ricky Burns in his last fight and ended his long time relationship with coach and manager Brendon Smith before moving to the States.

More news about this matchup will be known over the coming weeks.

Shannon O'Connell Talks Turning Pro, Plans For 2012

28 year old Slacks Creek resident Shannon O'Connell (1-0) first started boxing during 2003 in Adelaide. She hurt her back playing netball and the physio told her to take a year off so Shannon went down to her local gym to keep fit.

The career started there when she met Terry Fox who used to race speedway with her dad before he passed away.

"My dad died when I was only 2. When I started boxing I was determined to make his name proud and believed he was with me every step of the way. I had his initials "KO" on my mouth gaurd and still do."

"My mum died just over 4 years ago and that was tough but it just made me stronger and more determined to succeed."

With women's boxing being brought into the Olympics for the first time it would have been a good chance for O'Connell to claim a gold medal but she made the decision to turn pro in December of 2011 where she stopped Kelly O'Doherty in round 2. She tells Aus-Boxing, "My decision to turn professional was a hard one and one that I guess I should have made a little earlier."

"I had done a lot of travelling last year with boxing which was amazing and I learnt alot and became a better boxer for it but I missed my kids like crazy every time. Leading up to the Olympics there is going to be a lot more travel involved for months at a time and I just couldn't do that to my kids."

"My son starts year 1 this year and I want to be there for him through it. I also became a single mum last year and am trying to work two jobs plus train and I wasn't enjoying it anymore. I put too much preassure and expectation on myself."

A state title shot awaits Shannon in 2012 who will fight for the QLD title on March 2, "In 2012 I plan on getting as many fights in as I can. I already have a QLD title lined up for March 2 and then another fight only a couple of weeks later."

"I want to be the best and go the right way about getting there. I want to be remembered for being a boxer with skill, style and heart however I will take my time to get there and not rush into things that I am not ready for."

The majority of female boxers have trouble being matched in Australia with a lack of opponents but since turning pro this has been quite the opposite for O'Connell, "As funny as it sounds there is actually more girls around in my weight in the pro's than the amateurs. I was always giving away weight or having to travel to get a fight as an amateur. "

Smithy's Promotions To Debut March 3 In Toowoomba

For the first time in six years a professional boxing card will be held on the Darling Downs. Brendon Smith yesterday was proud to announce that Smithy’s Promotions will be hosting its first event on March 3 at Rumours International in Toowoomba. This event is brought to you by Sportsbet.com.au, The National Hotel, Toowoomba Truck Spares, Reedy Creek Recycling and Sovereign Property Partners.

“It’s the first fight back here in six years. We have been promoting Toowoomba all over the world and now we are very excited to be able to bring back what we have learnt and give a great show with quality fights and fighters on the card” said promoter Brendon Smith.

The Card will feature five professional fights including Czar Amonsot who fought a 12 round war with Michael Katsidis in a world title fight in Las Vegas. The fight won fight of the year in USA.

“I told Brendon that he will not regret putting me on the card because I’m going to give an exciting fight on March 3” said Amonsot.

Also fighting on the Night is current Australian Junior Welter weight champion “The Assassin” Jack Asis.

“I’m looking forward to fighting in Toowoomba I am training very hard and want to give an exciting fight for the Toowoomba fans,” Asis said. Asis is on a winning streak after knocking out his last three opponents who include two former Australian Champions and the number 1 ranked featherweight in the USA in his last outing.

Toowoomba’s own Brayd “The Great White” Smith will be having his second professional fight, coming off a first round knockout win on the Gold Coast in August last year.

“It’s very exciting to be able fight in my hometown and show the people that support me and have helped me so much over the years here what I have learnt and what I can do in the ring” said Braydon Smith.

Making his professional debut is another Toowoomba fighter “Iron” Will Young.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to fight in my hometown, something I didn’t get the chance to do as an amateur and I am looking forward to making an impression in the pro ranks,” Young said.

Tickets went on sale yesterday and are available at Smithy’s Gym as well as the National Hotel in Toowoomba.

There are only 1000 tickets available and they are expected to sell fast priced at $75 for ringside and $45 for general seating.

“Toowoomba has had a tough 12 months since the floods last year so we have tried to price the tickets to make them very affordable for everyone”. Said Promoter Brendon Smith.

Lovemore N'dou To Face Van Heerden

After making the decision to keep boxing late in 2011, Lovemore N'dou has announced he will fight against IBO Welterweight champion Chris Van Heerden (17-1-1) of South Africa who is 24 years of age.

"I haven't fought in Australia since early in 2007 and it's about time," N'dou told The Australian.

"After I beat Van Heerden, I plan to fight in America against the best, and then I can retire for good. With the likes of Floyd Mayweather Junior, Manny Pacquiao and Victor Ortiz out there it's a very interesting division. I am the first former boxing champion to become a lawyer and now I can become the first lawyer to win a world title."

Prazak To Make US Debut, January 19 In New York

WIBA Super Featherweight champion, Diana Prazak (9-1-0) who has just arrived in the States ahead of a years training under the Greg Cohen Promotions banner will fight on January 19 in New York against Lucia Larcinese (4-8-0) over 6 rounds in a none title fight.

Australian based manager Adam Wilcox told Aus-Boxing.com, "I'm very happy to get Diana on a show so early in the year, especially one in New York and televised."

"Her opponent will prove a really good test and an early indication on what the next year has ahead."

The show will be televised on the Fox Sports network in America but will not be shown in Australia.

Mundine Joins Cameron Dunkin's Stable

Ring TV has reported that Anthony 'The Man' Mundine has joined Las Vegas-based manager Cameron Dunkin's stable of fighters.

Dunkin also manages the likes of WBC/WBO titleholder Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley, Mikey Garcia and Kelly Pavlik,  as well as co-managing unbeaten Australian prospect Paul 'Showtime' Fleming.

Dunkin is eying potential fights such as those opposite WBC Middleweight beltholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, WBA Junior Welterweight titleholder Miguel Cotto or WBC Junior Middleweight strapholder Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"He's been a great champion. He's 36 years old, but he's still an outstanding fighter, and there's great fights out there for him," said Dunkin.

In Mundine's last fight he breezed past Saul Alvarez's brother-Rigoberto Alvarez in a 12 round decision to claim the interim WBA belt.

Billy Dib To Make Mandatory Defense Against Eduardo Escobedo

Billy Dib has announced that he will make his first mandatory defense of his IBF Featherweight title against Mexican, Eduardo "Canilla" Escobedo (32-3-0) on March 7, 2012 in Tasmania.

The fight will form part of an IBF World Title doubleheader with Daniel Geale defending his title against Adama in the main event.

On the fight Billy said, "This is a fight that was supposed to happen on two occasions but fell through." "I'm going to knock this guy out!"

Escobedo won an IBF title eliminator in July against Joksan Hernandez with a 2nd round knockout to earn himself a world title shot. His biggest fight came against Daniel Ponce de Leon in December 2007 for the WBO Super Bantamweight title where he lost in a 12 round decision. Apart from that Eduardo has held the WBC Silver Super Featherweight title and most recently the IBF Latino Featherweight title.

The card which also features Kali Meehan is expected to be shown on Main Event PPV.
