Dawson Comes Home Strong To Outpoint Kalakoda

By Brett Bonetti

Former two time world title challenger Daniel “The Rock” Dawson (37-3 -1, 24 KOs) defeated a game Virgil Kalakoda (25-7-3) from South Africa via majority decision to claim the PABA & Pan African Middleweight Titles at the WA Italian Club, North Perth tonight.

Dawson and Kalakoda fought to an entertaining draw in July this year and Dawson was determined to be victorious this time round.

In a tough fight to score, Dawson started the fight well and took majority of the early rounds landing the cleaner blows.

But in Round 7, Kalakoda hurt Dawson with a good body shot to get himself back in the fight as Dawson seemed to be tiring.

Dawson who is trained by Bobby Mayne, author of “The Art of Boxing” urged his fighter to dig deep as Dawson managed to find something extra as he took Rounds 8 & 9 by moving well around the ring landing cleaner shots while making Kalakoda miss.

Similar to the first fight, Kalakoda finished strong and took the last 3 Rounds of the fight. Scores after 12 exciting rounds were 115-113, 115-112 Dawson and 114-114.

A very happy Dawson thanked his team and supporters and looks forward to his next opportunity. Two names that were mentioned as possible future opponents after the fight were Anthony “The Man” Mundine and current WBA World Light Middleweight Champion Austin Trout.

When asked about a possible trilogy with Kalakoda after fighting 24 rounds with him this year, Dawson said that he had learned this was Kalakoda’s last fight and wished him all the best and thanked him for a great fight.

In other action, Heavyweight KO artist Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (10-0, 9 KO’s) stopped late sub Alipate Liavaa (4-10) at 1:51 of Round 1.

Exciting Super Middleweight prospect Luke Sharp (3-0) lived up to the hype with a very impressive 2nd Round TKO victory over John Argus (1-1). After the fight Sharp said there is a possibilty he could move down to the Middleweight division in the future.

Light Heavyweight Andrew Green (8-0, 5 KO’s) scored a points decision victory over Kashif Mumtaz (8-27-1) in a scrappy contest in what at times resembled an MMA match. Mumtaz kept the crowd entertained by poking his tongue out several times at Green during the fight and even used the “Crane Technique” pose from the Karate Kid movie in the middle of the ring in round 4. Scores after 6 rounds were 60-54, 60-54 and 59-55.

In the opening fight of the night Wes Capper defeated Daniel Roy Maxwell by unanimous decision with scores 40-36 on all cards.

In attendance tonight was Former WBO Female Lightweight Champion Erin McGowan who was interviewed in the ring. McGowan is hoping to bring WBC Light Welterweight Female champion Monica Silvina Acosta to Perth for a rematch for the title after McGowan was robbed of the title after being on the wrong end of a shocking judge’s decision in Argentina in August this year.

Daniel Dawson And Lucas Browne 6PR Interview

Daniel 'The Rock' Dawson and Lucas 'Big Daddy' Browne are two fighters on the cusp of boxing's big time . In a 6PR online only interview they attribute that success in part to their backgrounds in Muay Thai and MMA respectively.

Western Alliance 6 "Daniel Dawson vs Virgil Kalakoda"

As a five-time National Boxing Champion and seven-time World Champion Kickboxer, Daniel ‘The Rock’ Dawson is hungrier than ever for a world title in a rematch against South African Virgil Kalakoda in Perth on Friday 9 December.

Vying for the World Boxing Association (WBA) regional belts of the Pan Asian and Pan African Titles, two of Australia’s most currently fierce and competitive fighters will go head-to-head on Western Alliance 6 Show in what promises to be an exciting revenge re-match.

“Successfully winning these two titles would give me status of champion of half of the world and a number five world ranking in the WBA,” says Dawson, whose win would thrust him into the top six among the WBA’s official rankings.

With a clash between the pair back in July, Dawson dominated the first half of the fight with Kalakoda but succumbed to fatigue in the final rounds. His draw with Kalakoda has only steeled his resolve to come back better than ever.

“It’s a very exciting time and stepping stone for me and I am just bursting with happiness and pride to see my dreams and goals coming closer” says Dawson, who has 36 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw to his name.

A victory for Dawson against Kalakoda would also give him the credibility to challenge current World Champions in the USA where he is hoping to secure a fight next year.

“This opportunity is as big as anything Green and Mundine has done in the sport!” declares Dawson. “I have more character, more passion and I have better rapport with the community than either of them.”

In the co-feature bout undefeated Light Heavyweight Andrew Green (7-0-0) will fight the awkward style of Kashif Mumtaz (8-27-1) who was born in Pakistan and now resides in New Zealand. Green is favourite to win but one can't forget the upset Mumtaz caused earlier this year when he stopped Les Sherrington in the first round.

On the undercard:

  • Lucas "Big Daddy" Browne 9-0 (8 KO's) will take on Fai Falamoe in a rematch from their WBF Asia Pacific Heavyweight title fight in September where Browne won with a 5th round knockout. No titles will be on the line this time with the bout over 6 rounds instead of the scheduled 10 last time.

  • Luke Sharp (2-0-0) will clash with John Argus (1-0-0) over 4 rounds at Super Middleweight.

  • In the opening fight Wes Capper will make his debut against Daniel Roy Maxwell who is also in his first professional fight. The bout will be over 4 rounds at Middleweight.

The fights will be held at the WA Italian Club, 219 Fitzgerald St. Perth on Friday 9 December. Doors open at 6pm with six professional boxing bouts starting at 7pm. To purchase tickets, contact CDL Boxing Promotions on 0422 787 445 or visit www.cdlboxing.com.au.
