Leapai Disposes Of Weida In One

The Arena in Fortitude Valley Brisbane, Queensland played host to 3 pro and 3 amateur events on Thursday the 8th of December. The night featured 2 international Heavyweight contests and an international Lightweight bout, and marked the return of former League star and hot boxing prospect Soloman Huomano.

The night began with 3 Amateur fights, while the crowd began to roll in to get ready to watch Australia’s biggest punchers go head to head. Anthony Mundine and his entourage were present and it really was great to see Mundine support the smaller show.

The Main event featured arguably the hardest punching Heavyweight on these shores when Alex Leapai now (25-3-3) faced imported journeyman Troy Weida (46-21-2) from the United States.

Alex’s ring entrance was as usual spectacular as he entered the arena with entourage and his mix of Samoan music to a standing vocal crowd. Round 1 began and Alex got straight to work and it became clear quickly Weida couldn’t deal with the crisp and powerful hooks and relentless pressure of Leapai who knocked Weida down hard left right hook to the head, chants of stop it echoed the Arena as the wobbly journeyman beat the count and when the referee allowed the proceedings to continue Alex punched The American around the ring for another 30 seconds before the fight was stopped in round 1. Alex looked quicker and fit and is really looking world class.

The return after 2 years of Soloman “Solo” Houmono (18-1-1) was great to see and a valuable addition to Australian Heavyweight boxing, his opponent Junior Pati (6-17-0) was always in for a hard nights work as the very fit and leaner Solo moved beautifully around the ring avoiding bombs from Pati and countered and boxed through the first round. He looked great in the first and upped the tempo in the second as he sat down on his shots and caught the pressing Pati with a Punch that Saw Pati land halfway outside the ring, as the referee began the count the Arena spectators knew that Pati wasn’t getting to his feet. Welcome back Solo, Australian boxing needs you. Click here to view video from the closing stages of the Haumono fight.

The start of the night began with a Lightweight contest between Japan’s Takashi Sugiura (3-0-0) and very game Matthew Seden (0-2-0), in an all action affair between 2 willing combatants that saw this fight go the distance and provided great entertainment to the growing crowd.

From the opening bell Suguira proved to be the more talented of the 2 in centre ring as he landed at will and dominated Seden who threw everything he could at the tall Japanese fighter in the first 2 rounds. Round 3 saw Seden come back strong and he started to hit Suguira a lot more as the crowd settled in to a back and forward last 2 rounds. Suguira was awarded the fight by all three judges and scores were 39-36, 40-35,40-36.

It was a good all actioned card featuring 2 of Australia’s leading Heavyweights and provided plenty of big punch bombs.

Leapai dispatched of massive Russian-Evgeny Orlov in October with a massive right uppercut in round 4 putting the giant to sleep. Leapai's 2 previous fights in 2011 have been KO victories over Okello Peter and Jason Barnett with neither fight going past round 3.

39 year old Troy Weida (46-21-2) has fought twice in 2011 after not fighting since 2005 before that. His fights in 2011 have both been against Jerry Simpson recording a pair of 2nd round TKO victories. Although having 70 fights Weida has only fought past 10 rounds twice with the most recent in 2002.

Should Leapai win on Thursday night his manager Noel has been in talks with Danny 'Brixton Bomber' Williams from the UK for him to fight Alex here in Australia.

In the co-feature bout-'Irish Hurricane' Dennis Hogan (6-0-1) will clash with Robert Clarke (0-1-0) over 6x2 minute rounds at Super Middleweight.

On the undercard:

Fellow Australian Heavyweight, Solomon Haumono (17-1-1) will return to the ring for the first time in 2 years when he clashes with New Zealand's, Junior Pati (6-17-0). In Solomon's last bout he defeated Michael Kirby for the OPBF title and will use his bout against Pati to ease back in. Haumono has been sparring Leapai in preparation for the fight.

Also on the undercard will be a handful of amateur fights including a corporate bout between Brad Connors and Troy Krane.
